I taught myself to sew almost thirty years ago when I moved to Washington, D.C. from Ghana in West Africa.  I needed to learn how to sew because a job had become available in the DC area, but you had to be able to sew in order to get the position.  At the time my
daughter was 2 years old and I had two children living with relatives in Ghana.  Except for a few friends and relatives here in America, I was essentially on my own. The way I saw it, I had two choices: move back to Ghana or find a way to make things work in America.  I
chose the latter; I bought an old machine and some books on sewing and began my own lessons.  When the time came to apply for the job, I could sew well enough to convince the supervisor to hire me.  Within a few years, I moved to Chicago and began working as a
seamstress at Advertising Flag Company.  

When I was teaching myself to sew using that old machine, I never thought that all these years later, I would still be sewing.  I definitely never thought that I would be creating my own designs and that people would like them enough to buy them.  My specialties include accessories for the home and for the person.  In many of my creations, I fuse African, European and American fabrics.  Among my very unique merchandise are one of a kind, handmade quilts, pillows, jewelry and handbags.  I also create African-inspired clothing
and hats.

I believe that the skills that I have taught myself and that I have learned throughout the years are being enhanced by creating original items for the public.  I would be honored to create an item for you.  Please browse through my galleries and contact me if you have any questions.
